The end of the year is the perfect time to reflect back on the horror movies that were released in the previous 12 months. While there are some clear favorites, likeX, Pearl, Smile, Prey, andScream (2022), others likeHalloween Endsfell flat. Sometimes, fans really connect with a film that has awful reviews. But in the case of some of the worst-rated horror films of 2022, there are several horror movies that have low Rotten Tomatoes ratings that audiences didn’t really connect with.

From a boring demonic possession film to another take on the haunted house that doesn’t bring much to the subgenre, these horror movies can definitely be skipped in favor of more exciting ones.

The ghost holding a baby in The Legend Of La Llorona

RELATED:Is Wednesday Ranked Higher On Rotten Tomatoes Than Other Addams Family Movies?

The Legend of La Llorona - 7%

InThe Legend of La Llorona, Carly (Autumn Reese) and Andrew Candlewood (Antonio Cupo) go to Mexico with their child Danny (Danny Trejo) and find a supernatural presence. The movie only has a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes along with a 36% Audience Score. The couple learns about the myth of a mother’s ghost haunting the area and when Danny is taken, it seems that it isn’t made up at all.

Unlike thebest horror movies about ghosts, this one doesn’t have much story to work with. There are countless horror films about families moving into eerie houses or going on vacation and discovering that all is not well. It’s safe to say that this movie didn’t much of an impression this year. The legend itself isn’t very scary either, and since there are so many films about spirits, it’s easy to expect more.

prey-for-the-devil-shot Cropped

Prey For The Devil - 16%

The2022 horror moviePrey For The Devilisn’t much to write home about, either. The film has a 16% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and a 69% Audience Score. A nun named Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) is uniquely talented when it comes to exorcisms and she begins learning how to get rid of demons.

In the process, Sister Ann learns that she has a close connection to someone who has been affected by evil, but this reveal isn’t enough to save an otherwise dull story. There are so many demonic possession films that it’s hard to get excited about this one. Any future films in this subgenre should definitely try harder to create unique characters and bolder storylines.

Alicia Silverstone and James Tupper in The Requin

The Requin - 19%

The Requinhas only 19% on the website and a very low Audience Score of only 7%. Alicia Silverstone, known for lighter fare likeCluelessandThe Baby-Sitters Club, stars as Jaelyn, a woman who goes on vacation in Vietnam with her husband Kyle (James Tupper). It’s not one of thebest shark moviesand, instead, is definitely one of the most lackluster.

It’s easy to compareThe Requinto the classicJaws, which is superior in terms of plot and character. But the movie is also reminiscent of the 2016 thrillerThe Shallows, which features Blake Lively’s character Nancy trying to win against a shark. That is a much more entertaining movie and has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score of 78%. It feels like Nancy goes on a real journey and her emotional state is clear throughout the whole story. In the case ofThe Requin, not much is going on at all.

Mena Suvari The Accursed All You Need Is Blood

The Accursed - 20%

InThe Accursed, Elly (Sarah Grey) spends time at a cabin to help out a friend named Alma (Mena Suvari). Elly is taking care of Mrs. Ambrose (Meg Foster), an older woman, and as is often the case in a horror movie, this turns out to be a terrible idea. Right away, this isn’t thrilling to watch. There are so many movies with cabin settings that it’s hard to get excited or think that this movie is going to be much different from the rest.

The movie only has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 27% Audience Score. There isn’t anything about it that makes it stand out and chances are that some horror fans haven’t even heard about it. It’s a good idea to skip this movie and wait forM. Night Shyamalan’sKnock At The Cabinto be released in 2023.

Emma Roberts in Abandoned

Abandoned - 20%

With a 20% rating and only a 26% Audience Score,Abandonedis another 2022 horror movie that received low ratings. After watching it, it’s hard not to think about whether there will ever be anoriginal haunted house horror movie. Emma Roberts plays Sara Davis, who moves into a new home with her husband Alex (John Gallagher Jr.) and their baby.

The tropes and cliches never stop coming here, with Sara noticing a presence in the house and everyone saying that she’s making things up and seeing things that aren’t real. Future haunted house movies should take a fresher approach to this classic story.
