Another indie game has been announced for the PS5 and Xbox Series X next-gen consoles.Recompileis a 3D adventure-platformer announced several years ago for PC. Developer Phigames has remained hard at work in the time since and tentatively remains on track to launchRecompilein 2020. Phigames co-founder andRecompileprogrammer Phi Dinh partnered with Sony to offerPlayStation fansa new introduction to his game, while also confirming the game’s development for next-gen platforms.

In a post published on the PlayStation Blog, Dinh breaks down some of the waysRecompileis more than just a typical action game. InRecompile, players take on the role of a self-aware artificial intelligence within avirtual world. Players will be able to define who this AI is and what they will become through their choices and action, resulting in different conclusions toRecompile’s story.

The task of the AI is left mysterious, but it begins with infiltrating what’s called The Mainframe. The Mainframe is completely open to explore in a seamless experience Dinh says suits thePS5well. Within The Mainframe are a variety of biomes, each with their own fauna and structures. Players will be able to choose whether to hack the enemies, which can turn them against each other, or to directly engage them in combat.

Dinh goes on to explain that sci-fi films and shows likeTronandRebootwere a heavy influence on him. The idea of being trapped in a virtual world was especially compelling, which led him to study AI and machine learning. That’s how the idea forRecompilewas born.

It was only through Dinh meeting and partnering with Phigames co-founders James Marshall and Rochard Evans, who work onVFX/animation and sound respectively, thatRecompilebecame an actual game. The contributions of each can be clearly seen inRecompile’s trailers.

Speaking of trailers, Phigames put out a new trailer to coincide with the announcement thatRecompileis coming tonext-gen platforms. The trailer offers a loot at the variety of gameplay to be found inRecompile, but it does an even better job of showing off the game’s diverse environments. Environments that vary from surprisingly natural scenes to completely cold and technological. All of it is very visually appealing, though. New fans will hopefully be seeing and hearing .

Recompilelaunches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2020.
